Monroe, Black Hawk headed back to state

The Monroe girls basketball team is headed back to state for the third straight year after beating Union Grove 48-37 to win the WIAA Division 2 Janesville Craig sectional championship Saturday.

Monroe junior Kylee Ritschard scored 14 of her 16 points in the second half to lift the Cheesemakers.

Monroe will play the winner of Luexemburg-Casco and Winneconne in the Division 2 state semifinals at 1:35 p.m. Friday, March 26 at the Kohl Center in Madison.

Tickets for the state tournament will go on sale at 6 a.m. Tuesday at Ruf's and at 7:30 a.m. at the Monroe High School office.

In Fort Atkinson, the Black Hawk Lady Warriors outlasted Central Wisconsin Christian, 58-43.

The Warriors trailed 13-12 after the first quarter, but erupted for 23 points in the second to take the lead headed into the break. Melissa Wellnitz, Rachel Rygh, Alyssa Piefer and Chaesta Shager all hit big buckets to key the comeback.

In the second half, Black Hawk played nearly error free to punch its second berth to the state tournament.
