FORT ATKINSON - The Monroe wrestling team posted four pins en route to a 45-31 season-opening win over Fort Atkinson Friday.
"The kids wrestled hard," Monroe coach Tom Witt said. "It was a good start for us. On paper, I thought we would win it and it ended up that way. We did everything we needed to do."
Monroe sophomore Aiden Sweeney, at 138 pounds, pinned Fort Atkinson's Zaiden Sigmund in 2 minutes, 44 minutes. Senior Sam Kind (170) pinned the Blackhawks' Nick Nandory in 2:41 and senior teammate Dempzy Foley (182) pinned Louis Jones in 55 seconds. Monroe senior Tyson Welsch pinned Fort Atkinson's Ian Foerster in the heavyweight class in 1:49.
The other win for the Cheesemakers in matches wrestled came from senior Travis Wolf (160), who defeated the Blackhawks' Brent Torrenga 9-5. Monroe sophomores Dakota Wickstrum (106), Julian Gruber (195) and Bodie Minder (220) each won by forfeits.
Fort Atkinson's Nico Roscioli at 152 edged Monroe sophomore Patrick Rielly 8-6. Cheesemaker freshman Max Patterson (126) looked to extend his first varsity match 6 minutes or three periods, but he got pinned by Fort Atkinson's Tristin Trevino.
The Cheesemakers wrestled without sophomore Alex Witt, who is recovering from a broken finger.
"Hopefully, he's back by Bi-State," Tom Witt said of his son.
Monroe will compete in the 8-team Janesville Parker Invitational today. The Cheesemakers will wrestle five matches total, but start out with two pool matches. The first place, second and last place teams from each pool will then match up.
The Chesemakers finished third in the Janesville Parker Invitational last year.
"Kenosha Bradford won it last year," Witt said. "I just want the kids to get better and get more matches. We finished last year and that is where we will probably be again."
On Dec. 8 the Cheesemakers host Stoughton.
