MONROE - After winning the Stateline Senior Legion League, Monroe has another hurdle to clear - winning the Senior Legion baseball regional tournament and punching its ticket to the state tourament.
Monroe (14-4-1) will open the regional tournament with a first-round game against Milton at 5 p.m. Wednesday at Stoughton. Monroe split two games with Milton earlier this summer.
"If we get good pitching and get hitting, we feel like we can beat anyone," Monroe's Mitch Marty said.
Eric Losenegger, Monroe's Senior Legion coach, plans to use five or six pitchers during the tournament.
"To win a tournament like that you need to be deep in pitching," he said. "We have had strong pitching all year. I take it for granted."
Eliminating any errors and mental mistakes will be key. Losenegger looks at the offense as the catalyst in winning the tournament. If Monroe can score five to six runs a game, Losenegger likes his team's chances of making a state run.
"We will go as far as our offense will take us," he said. "To sum up the regional, I expect to win it."
Monroe closed out the regular season with a bang as Taylor Riese hit two home runs and drove in four runs to spark an 8-6 win over Mount Horeb.
Monroe pitcher Kris Rieder wants Monroe to remain aggressive pitching and at the plate.
"If we get ahead, we have to keep going," Rieder said. "We have to attack all seven innings. We can't let up."
