Monroe Avalanche Mites, Squirts stay hot

On Saturday, Jan. 15 the Avalanche Mite A team hosted the Waunakee Wildcats at SLICE in Monroe and won 5-3.

Cade Janecke of the Avalanche team scored the first goal of the game in the first period.

The Wildcats answered with three goals in the first period. The Avalanche dominated the remainder of the game, scoring four more goals, two for Cade Janecke and one each for Broc Kuberski and Tessa Janecke. Recording assists on the goals were Josh Haight and Cade Janecke.

Avalanche Goalie Luke Kuberski recorded ten saves.

On Sunday, Jan. 16, the Avalanche Mite A team traveled to Iowa and tied the Dubuque Stars 2-2.

Cade Janecke scored the first goal of the game. The Stars scored two goals in the third period. Tessa Janecke of the Avalanche also scored one more goal in the third period.

Recording assists for the Avalanche were Bryce Montgomery and Cade Janecke. Goalie Luke Kuberski recorded ten saves.

On Jan. 8-9, 2011, Monroe Youth Hockey Association (MYHA) hosted the Avalanche Classic Mite Tournament. In the Mite A tournament, four teams participated: Monroe Avalanche, Dubuque Stars, Waupaca Comets, and Waterloo (Iowa) Jr. Hawks. Mite teams are boys and girls ages eight and under.

Each team played three games. The Avalanche won the first game against the Dubuque Stars 4-3.

Cade Janecke earned his first hat trick of the weekend, scoring all four of the Avalanche goals. Broc Kuberski and Payton Stauffacher each had an assist. Goalie Kaiden Klitzke recorded 14 saves.

The Avalanche won second game defeated Waupaca 6-1.

Cade Janecke earned a second hat trick in the tournament, scoring four goals. Luke Kuberski and Tessa Janecke each scored one goal. Cade Janecke also had one assist. Goalie Heath Bear recorded 13 saves.

On Sunday, Jan. 9 the Avalanche defeated the Waterloo Jr. Hawks in the championship 4-3.

Cade Janecke scored the first goal of the game, setting the tone for the Avalanche. The Jr. Hawks responded with two goals in the first period. The Avalanche came back strong scoring three goals in the second period, two by Tessa Janecke and one by Cade Janecke. Broc Kuberski and Cade Janecke each had an assist.

The Avalanche team hoisted the Stanley Cup replica after the victory. Each player in the tournament received a medal.

Avalanche Squirts

The Monroe Avalanche Squirt team (ages 9 and 10) continued their late season surge with a pair of shutout victories over the weekend.

On Saturday they defeated Wisconsin Dells 13-0. Jared Cline and Jamaar Manor led the scoring attack as each player recorded a hat trick (three goals). Riley Jones and Emma Ness each added two goals while Joe Wyss, Daniel Ward and Travis Edmunds scored once. Connor Nafzger earned a playmaker award for assisting on three goals. Players recording two assists were Cline, Wyss and Cade Janecke, while Jones and Ward each tallied one.

Heath Bear stopped all twelve shots he faced in goal to preserve the shutout.

On Sunday the team travel to Dubuque and earned a 5-0 victory. Wyss scored Monroe's first goal midway through the second period as he fired a shot from just inside the blue line to beat the Stars goaltender. Wyss added his second goal of the game by redirecting a shot from Cline to stretch the lead. Others adding goals were Ward, Manor and Edmunds.

Bear continued his strong play in goal recording his third shutout of the season.

This weekend the Squirt and Avalanche Girls teams host a tournament in Monroe. Games will be played on Saturday and Sunday.
