BRODHEAD - Monroe volleyball coach Dave Gersbach knew it was just a matter of time before the Cheesemakers picked up their first win.

Monroe went 4-0-1 Saturday, snapping a nine-match losing streak to win the silver bracket at the Brodhead Invitational.

The Cheesemakers could have played in the gold bracket, but Lake Mills earned the No. 4 seed after winning the tie-breaker by four points against the Cheesemakers in head-to-head point differential.

"We are coming around," Gersbach said. "We wanted to get back in the gold bracket and defend our title. These young girls just needed to get some confidence and feel good about themselves. They did a great job and they deserve it."

The Cheesemakers (4-9, 0-4 Badger South) opened the invite by beating Arygle 25-16, 25-18. Monroe senior Sara Donvito had 10 kills to lead the Cheesemakers. Monroe junior Kirstie Hinojosa had a team-high 15 assists and she added three aces.

The Cheesemakers closed out the split with senior Jaclyn Ditter's kill. Ditter had nine kills to lead the Cheesemakers.

"We needed to get a win under our belts," Ditter said after the Cheesemakers split two games against Lake Mills. "We just wanted to play better, get some wins and play as a team. That is our focus. Hopefully, we can carry that into Fort Atkinson."

Ditter noticed a difference in the second game against Lake Mills.

"Our enthusiasm picked up a lot," she said. "That carried us through."

She also knew what the difference was against the Cheesemakers.

"If we could have received better, we could have competed better," she said of handling the service receive. "The girls know that."

Juda played without junior middle blocker Ellen Kiser.

"Right now, we are playing without any consistency," Juda coach Pam Green said. "We have played at a high level sometimes and at a low level. We are kind of see-sawing back and forth."
