OREGON - Monroe junior Sydney Hilliard scored a game-high 24 points to lead the Cheese-makers to a 70-53 win over Oregon Tuesday.

For Monroe (2-0) it marked the first Badger South Conference game. Monroe junior Emily Benzschawel added 14 points and senior Sydney Mathiason pitched in 13 points. Sophomore teammate Grace Mathiason chipped in eight points.

"I think we saw an improvement from our Friday game," Monroe coach Sam Mathiason said. "It was our first conference game and we had some kids see the intensity level you have to play with. To be able to get that first conference win and got contributions from a lot of different kids, I thought it was really solid."

The Cheesemakers jumped out to a 36-24 lead in the first half. However, Oregon's Liz Uhl scored 20 points and the Panthers were only outscored by eight points in the second half.

"I think defensively we played really solid," Mathiason said. "Offensively, they continued to share the ball. Sydney Hilliard did a good job of driving into the lane and finishing."

Monroe will play New Berlin Eisenhower at 6:45 p.m. Saturday at Brookfield Central High School.

"That will be a great game to see where we are at early in the year," Mathiason said.
