MONROE - The Monroe sixth-grade boys basketball team placed third in the Division 2 Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament in De Pere, West De Pere, Ashwaubenon and Wrightstown on April 9-10.

The tournament, which was organized by The Great Northwest Basketball League, brought together 83 of the top community-based sixth-grade boys basketball teams from all across the state. State champions were crowned in four divisions: Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4/5, based on the enrollment of the high school into which each team feeds.

In pool play, Monroe defeated New Berlin West 36-32 and then beat Whitnall 40-38. In the round of 16, Monroe knocked off Seymour 50-37. Monroe edged Beaver Dam 29-27 in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Ashwaubenon beat Monroe 53-41. Monroe bounced back to knock off New Berlin Eisenhower 40-25 in the third-place game.

Pewaukee defeated Ashwaubenon 41-39 to win the Division 2 championship.

The Monroe team is coached by Kevin Leuzinger and assistant coaches, Erik Huschitt and Bernie Roidt. Carson Leuzinger and J.T. Seagreaves were named to the all-tournament team for Division 2.

The Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament is an annual event, held in February, March or April of each year, pitting the top community-based teams in Wisconsin against each other.

The tournament is organized by size of communities, much like the WIAA state high school tournaments, so that top teams can compete on a level playing field with other programs their size.
