MONROE - The Monroe sixth grade boys basketball team finished fifth place in the Wisconsin State Invitational Championship Tournament March 26-27 in Merrill, Wausau and Marathon.
Monroe went 4-2 in the tournament and defeated New Berlin West 39-31 in the fifth place game.
Monroe went 1-1 in pool play beating Seymour 33-18 and losing to Holmen 48-44. In the round of 16, Monroe defeated Notre Dame 48-43 and in the quarterfinals they lost to Onalaska 42-22. In the fifth-eighth place semifinals, Monroe defeated Luxemburg-Casco 39-32.
The tournament, which was organized by The Great Northwest Basketball League, brought together 79 of the top community-based sixth grade boys basketball teams from all across the state. The Monroe team is coached by Jerry Tordoff, Charlie Baumann and Mark Setterstrom. Alex Tordoff of Monroe was named to the All-Tournament team for Division 2.
State champions were crowned in Division 1, Division 2, Division 3 and Division 4/5, based on the enrollment of the high school into which each team feeds. Ripon defeated New Berlin Eisenhower 46-38 to win the Division 2 championship. Middleton defeated Madison East 48-45 to win the Division 1 championship. In Division 3, Northwestern defeated Southern Door 43-27 to win the title and Darlington defeated Columbus 50-33 to win the Division 4/5 championship.
