MONONA - The Monroe football team looked to shock the Badger South Conference again this week, but the Cheesemakers' upset bid came up just short in a 10-6 loss to Monona Grove Friday.

Coming on the heels of Monroe's 25-21 upset win over Oregon last week, the Cheesemakers' defense kept them in the game. Monroe (3-3, 1-3 Badger South) limited Monona Grove running back Toren Young, a University of Iowa recruit, to 107 rushing yards on 29 carries.

The Cheesemakers twice drove the ball inside the Silver Eagles' 10-yard line, but were turned away without scoring.

"We definitely left some points out on the field," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "If we would have scored inside the 10-yard line it could have been a different ballgame. We moved the ball. We just didn't put it in the end zone when we needed to."

Bottling up Young and limiting him to 107 rushing yards was well below his season average of 207 rushing yards. More importantly, the Cheesemakers kept Young out of the end zone.

"He's one of the best backs in the state," Miller said of Young. "It's an incredible performance by our defense."

Monroe racked up 247 total yards compared to 200 total yards for the Silver Eagles. The Cheesemakers had 16 first downs compared to 12 for the Silver Eagles. Monroe junior fullback Isaac Allen had a 1-yard TD run in the third quarter to cut the Silver Eagles' lead to four points, but the Cheesemakers missed the extra point.

Monroe junior running back Cole Murray rushed for 97 yards on 21 carries. Junior quarterback Tyler Elmer completed 17 of 24 passes for 128 yards. Junior teammate Alex Tordoff had eight receptions for 60 yards and senior Garrett Gogin had three receptions for 61 yards.

Monroe will host Madison Edgewood next week and the Cheesemakers can become playoff eligible with wins against Edgewood and Fort Atkinson in two of their final three games.

"There is not a game on our schedule that is not a winnable game," Miller said. "Anyone can beat anyone in the Badger Conference on any given night."
