MONONA - A short-handed Monroe boys hockey co-op lost to Monona Grove 12-2 Tuesday night.
The Avalanche (0-10, 0-5 Badger South) had three players miss the game due to injuries. Matt Hodgson missed the game due to a broken shoulder, Jake Trickel missed the game due to a concussion, and Darlington's Andy Turpin missed the game because of a knee injury.
Gus Werhane of Lena-Winslow scored the first goal for the Avalanche at the end of the first period on an assist from Johnny Kallgren. T.J. Parrent of Freeport also scored a goal in the third period on an assist from Brett Jones.
"Monona Grove is a decent hockey team," Avalanche coach Nate Brown said. "It was a fast-paced game, and they played hard."
Goalie Anthony Theisen had 24 saves.
Brown said the Avalanche need to keep communicating on the ice.
With three players injured, it was a challenge against the Silver Eagles.
"We don't have the depth of a lot of teams in terms of numbers," Brown said.
The Avalanche are heading into a six-game stretch that will feature four games at home. The Avalanche play Madison La Follette at 7 p.m. Thursday.
"They need to come out strong putting shots on the net and communicating just like any other game," Brown said.
