MONROE - The Monroe Avalanche hockey co-op was down two starters and lost to Monona Grove 14-1 Tuesday night. The Avalanche have just one game left and have been ruled ineligible for the regional tournament after two players were disqualified in a game at Stoughton Feb. 2.
The Avalanche (2-13) were playing without starting goalie Anthony Theisen and Brett Jones.
"That was not a surprise," Avalanche coach Nate Brown said of the loss Tuesday. "It's very tough. We need everyone out on the ice. We know we don't have as many guys as other teams. I think it would have been a different game if we would have had everyone on the team."
Gus Werhane scored the only goal for the Avalanche about 7 minutes into the game, on an assist from Johnny Kallgren.
Brown said not being eligible for the postseason is tough.
"I strongly disagree with it," Brown said. "There is nothing we can do to fix it. Unfortunately this group of guys, who deserve a playoff game, won't get one. I'm more appalled that players on another team would decide they would play a game that is not hockey. It was dangerous. Fortunately, no one got hurt."
The game against the Silver Eagles was Senior Night and the last home game for the Avalanche.
Brown said he wanted everyone to walk away knowing the group of seniors has different skills and talents and that they have started the program in the right direction.
The Avalanche will play defending Division 2 state champion Sauk Prairie to wrap up the season Thursday night.
"We are excited to play Sauk Prairie," Brown said. "Our guys have not quit in a game this year. They will show up and everyone will be back and ready to go."
