MONONA - The Monroe High School volleyball team got off to a slow start Thursday and weren't able to recover against Monona Grove, dropping a Badger South Conference match in three sets.

Monona Grove cruised to a 25-13 win in the first set. The Cheesemakers (10-10, 1-3 Badger South) mounted comebacks in both the second and third sets before losing 25-21 and 25-20.

"In the first game, we had a few mistakes," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "It took us down the rest of the game. We had some surges late in the second and third games. It just wasn't enough to energize the whole team for an entire game. It was nice to have those surges. We have to step it up earlier in the game. MG is a good team. I'm not taking anything away from them. If we would have been focused from the beginning I think we could have played them better."

Monroe senior Alicia Kuester had a team-high six kills, and junior Sydney Mathiason had six kills and four blocks. Senior Chloe Schroeder had a team-best seven blocks.

Monroe senior Lexi Hilliard racked up 12 digs, and senior Hannah Neuenschwander added nine assists.
