MONROE - The Mike Muranyi Junior Golf Foundation and the Green County YMCA have formed a new partnership to enhance the health and wellness of Green County youth.
Beginning this summer, MMJGF golfers also will become summer members of the YMCA. This partnership will allow the foundation to grow beyond just golf and will expand to health and wellness. The expertise of the YMCA staff will be used to incorporate fitness and fun days at the YMCA along with golf lessons.
The program started with 25 children in the first year, growing to 62 participants last summer. This year's goal is 100 children. The foundation has partnered with the YMCA to use its outreach in the community to grow beyond golf and is a natural summer extension of the in-school golf programs. The school program this past year included the elementary schools along with Monroe Middle School, exposing more than 800 children to golf.
The partnership will provide transportation to and from the Monroe Country Club to the YMCA for fitness days, which will include working with a wellness coach on strength and conditioning for six sessions. Registration is limited to 100 junior golfers. Last year's cost of $75 will remain the same this year, thanks to area donors and sponsors. The fee covers junior membership at MCC and a three-month membership at the YMCA, golf lessons, fitness and fun sessions, play days at MCC, junior tournaments for those who are interested and lunch on the days that they play at MCC.
For more information, contact Todd Edwards, MCC director of golf, at 608-426-0968 or the YMCA at 608-325-2003. Scholarships are available for those not able to pay the foundation fee.
