Milton's Ernst hits 3-run walkoff homer

MILTON - Monroe's baseball team lost a stunner to Milton Monday, 7-6, on a three-run walk off home run in the bottom of the seventh.

Logan Wells pitched the first six innings for the Cheesemakers, striking out five, walking three and allowing three runs.

"He didn't do too bad," Monroe head coach Dustin Huffman said. "In the fifth he struggled a little bit. He walked a guy, let up a double and hit a batter. He got a little flustered. But he battled back."

In the seventh, Mitch Marty took over on the mound and Milton's Dane Burman hit a home run right off the bat. Then, the Cheesemakers reverted back to last year's futility.

A pop fly on the infield fell for a hit and on a grounder, third baseman Cory Kundert tried to throw to second and turn a double play, but threw low and everybody was safe.

"That's the first time this year that sort of thing has happened to us. We make a mistake in the seventh and the pressure gets the better of us," Huffman said.

Instead of a pop out and a routine ground out, Marty had just one out, a sacrifice bunt to advance the runners. Brady Ernst then unleashed the game-ending home run for Milton with just one out.

Marty went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double and Kramer Henning was 2-for-2 with two RBIs. Kundert was 1-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and Dylan Schwitz was 1-for-3.

Monroe scored a run to open the game and added five more in the top of the fifth. Milton scored its first three runs in the bottom of the fifth.

"We played solid defense all night. Just that one instance of miscommunication put a kid on and things changed," Huffman said. "These are the type of games we've been winning this year, but it didn't happen tonight."

Monroe (5-2, 2-1 Badger South), gets back on the road today as the Cheesemakers try to knock off perennial conference power Oregon.
