Milton's block clamps down on Cheesemakers

MONROE - The Milton volleyball team used two and three players to block aggressively at the net Thursday and the Red Hawks stopped Monroe in three sets.

Monroe freshman Zoee Pond had a team-high seven kills and senior Alexis Allen dished out 10 assists and had one ace in the Red Hawks' 25-22, 25-18, 25-16 win over the Cheesemakers.

"We had some great rallies," Monroe coach Heidi Witt said. "We played at their level for most of the match. We did a lot of good things. When we got down we just had a hard time getting ourselves back up. I think once they conquer that mental game we will be really tough to beat."

Monroe senior Sydney Mathiason had five kills and two blocks. Junior Hailey Betthauser had a team-best four digs, and senior Meredith Hose added three digs. Senior Alysha Witt added nine assists, and sophomore Cassi Gersbach posted two blocks.

Monroe drops to 2-5 overall and 0-2 in the Badger South.

"They were putting two and three people up there to block Sydney Mathiason," Witt said. "Our hitters have to be smarter about where to hit it. We can't hit it right into their block."
