MILTON - One breakdown in the defense of the Monroe High School football team was one too many as Milton quarterback Danny Weitzel tossed an 80-yard touchdown pass early in the third quarter to beat the Cheesemakers 12-7 Friday.

For the second straight week, Monroe's offense sputtered and scored just seven points. The Cheesemakers were limited to 153 total yards.

The Red Hawks limited the Cheesemakeres to three first downs in the first hlaf and only 38 total yards in the second half.

After opening the season with a 31-13 win over Reedsburg, Monroe drops to 1-2 overall and 0-1 in the Badger South.

Monroe trailed 6-0 in the second quarter when junior quarterback Anthany Hernandez had a 77-yard TD run wiped out due to a holding penalty. The Cheesemakers bounced back after the penalty. Monroe sophomore Judson Rikkers made a jump ball catch on a pass from Hernandez down to the Red Hawks' 15-yard line. Moments later, Monroe senior Dempzy Foley had a TD run. Foley booted the extra point to give the Cheesemakers a 7-6 lead.

The Cheesemakers had a chance to add to their lead when sophomore Nick Bansley had an interception. Monroe took a timeout with one second to go after he returned it to the Red Hawks' 25-yard line. Foley's 42-yard field goal attempt came up short and the Cheesemakers maintained their 7-6 advantage at the half.

Weitzel connected with Blake Fuchs on an 80-yard TD pass to open the third quarter to give the Red Hawks a 12-7 lead.

Hernandez completed 3 of 8 passes for 55 yards. Foley led the Cheesemakers with 60 yards rushing.

Weitzel was 12-of-20 passing for 174 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Monroe will play at Watertown next week in a Badger South game.
