MILTON - The Monroe girls tennis team has had Milton's number this season, beating the Red Hawks twice.

In the third meeting on Monday, the Red Hawks defeated Monroe 4-3. The Cheesemakers swept all the doubles matches and lost all four singles matches.

"Maybe that is part of the problem," Monroe coach Stephanie Miller said about the Cheesemakers beating the Red Hawks 6-1 earlier this season. "The girls in their minds felt they should win. Milton really came out strong today."

Monroe senior Brooke McBain and sophomore Ellie Grossen, at No. 1 doubles, defeated Milton's Maddie Erdman and Zyann Furseth 6-4, 5-7, 6-1. At No. 2 doubles, Monroe's Ashley Segner and Chandra McGuire defeated Bailee Priewe and Ninna Mendoza 4-6, 6-3, 6-3. Monroe sophomore Allie Coplien and freshman Erin Gellings, at No. 3 doubles, beat the Red Hawks' Sarah Teal and Mariah Partipilo 6-4, 6-1.

Monroe senior Ellie Shuda, at No. 1 singles, lost to Milton's Marianne Moser 6-2, 6-0. Fellow senior Lily Priewe, at No. 2 singles, lost to Elizabeth Murphy 6-1, 6-4. At No. 3 singles, Erica Hegi lost to Hannah Simes 6-1, 6-4. Macayla Quinn, at No. 4 singles, dropped her match to Jamie Sommer 6-4, 6-3.

Monroe will play at the Badger Conference tournament at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium. Monroe, Milton and Monona Grove are in a three-way tie for second place at 4-2 behind Madison Edgewood in the Badger South.
