Milton cruises past Monroe

MILTON - The Milton High School girls tennis team swept every singles match en route to knocking off Monroe 6-1 Monday.

The lone win for the Cheesemakers came from seniors Maija Liimatainen and Morgan Quinn at No. 3 doubles. They defeated Milton juniors Riley Burke and Adrianna Ellefson 6-3, 7-6 (4).

"We came out sluggish tonight," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said. "We have gone quite a few days without hitting as a team with two rainouts at the end of last week and no tournament over the weekend and it showed. Our play improved as the match went on, but we dug too big of holes by then."

Liimatainen and Quinn led 5-3 in the second set and had chances to close out the match, but just came up short. The senior duo trailed 6-5 but rebounded to win the tiebreaker.

At No. 1 singles, Milton junior Sydney Davis beat Monroe senior Eva Priewe 6-4, 6-4. At No. 2 singles, Milton senior Ashley Lester defeated Monroe senior Katie Demianiuk 6-1, 6-4, and, at No. 3 singles, Milton junior Kylie Robinson defeated Monroe sophomore Ashley Placek 6-3, 6-3. At No. 4 singles, Milton junior Kayley Schultz beat Monroe freshman Sam Huizenga 6-2, 6-2.

The Red Hawks' No. 1 doubles team of juniors Bethany Crandall and Faith Dittman knocked off Monroe sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer 6-0, 6-0. Milton seniors Rachel Rennhack and Anna Harvatine outlasted Monroe seniors Hannah Zweifel and Shannon Rabotski 6-1, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles.

Saugstad said the scores of each set don't tell the story against the Red Hawks.

"When you look and see many 6-3 and 6-4 sets they appear to be close," Saugstad said. "In many of the sets we were down 4-1 before coming back and making it close in the end. Against a team like Milton, who we can compete against, we can't give them big leads and force ourselves to have to come back."

Monroe will host Monona Grove at 4 p.m. today. The match has been rained out twice and this is the third time it has been scheduled.
