Miller fielding a fine squad

WHITEWATER - Curt Miller's girls had a field day Saturday at the WTFA Indoor meet at UW-Whitewater.

The Cheesemakers' coach is rapidly realizing the fast learning curve of his squad, particularly in the field events, as Monroe placed an athlete in the top 20 in every field event at the prestigious meet that featured more than 50 teams.

"Our girls had an outstanding meet and we were led by our field events, which might be a common theme this year," Miller said.

Liz Knutson highlighted the effort with a new personal best of 9 feet, 6 inches in the pole vault, good for eighth place overall.

"I am extremely excited for Liz," Miller said. "She's a hard-working senior and an excellent leader. I doubt this is the last time our school record will be changed this year in the pole vault."

Meaghan Tomasiewicz also placed in the top 10, taking 10th with a long jump of 15 feet, 11 inches. Stephanie Wyss and Dallas Tourdot added 11th-place honors. Wyss cleared 4 feet, 10 inches in the high jump and Tourdot launched the shot put 33 feet, 11.5 inches.

Paige Hoesly took 17th in the triple jump with a mark of 32 feet, four inches.

On the track, Calyn Bidlingmaier ran her first race of the year with a time of 2:36.38 in the 800-meter run.

"This is a great indoor time for Calyn. She's in great shape and I expect big things from her this year," Miller said.

The Cheesemakers' next meet is Tuesday at Brodhead in a triangular also featuring Waterloo.

Rare Air

New Glarus senior Ashley Beutler, well-decorated in both cross country and track, found herself in uncharted territory late during the 1600 run at the WTFA.

Onalaska junior Jami Hill made her move with 400 meters remaining and edged Beutler by less than a second.

Beutler, the outdoor WIAA state outdoor record-holder in the 1600 (4:48.37) finished with a mark of 4:55.69.
