LAWRENCE, KAN. - Darlington junior Tyson Miehe smashed the school record in the 3,200-meter run, en route to a fifth place finish at the Kansas Relays Friday.

Miehe finished with a time of 9 minutes, 23.08 seconds. Patrick Cleary, a Monroe assistant coach had the previous record (9:39). Miehe broke the record on Monday when he finished the 3,200 with a time of 9:38. Miehe won the sectional and was a state qualifier last year and he came within 0.13 seconds of breaking Cleary's record last year.

"I knew I would get it this year," Miehe said. "It's pretty exciting. I got to run with a lot of quality there. I wanted to get here and crank off a good time. I got to run against a lot of people I have never seen before. I had no idea if I could medal."

In the high jump, Monroe junior Jake Hirsbrunner cleared 6 feet, 4 inches to tie for seventh place. He just missed 6-6 clipping his heel on the bar.

"I feel happy to get 6-4 in my first meet outside," Hirsbrunner said. "You have wind factors and other factors. I can't say I was satisfied. The thing about the high jump is you can always go higher."

Hirsbrunner, a state qualifier in the high jump last year, has been consistent this year in the event.

"It feels really cool to medal at a meet like this," he said. "It gives me a lot of confidence coming into the rest of the season. There was a lot of good competition."

Just like Hirsbrunner, Miehe wanted to start strong since he was unfamiliar with many of the runners.

"I got up in front," he said. "I wanted to stay there. I knew the pace was going to get faster as the race went on. I wanted to contend for the lead. In the middle of the race there was some jockeying and I got caught up a little bit. I was able to work my way back up and win a medal. It feels good to know that I have run that mark early in the season. There is still room for improvement and a lot more competitive races ahead."

Monroe junior Ethan Moehn and Miehe will both run in the Jim Ryun "Dream Mile" today. Jim Ryun was the first American high school runner to break 4 minutes in the mile. Moehn is the No. 10 seed and is in the fastest heat and Miehe is in a slower heat.

Miehe's best time in the 1,600 is 4:25, which came at the Wisconsin Indoor TFA championships.

"I want to medal, but I'm in a slower heat," he said. "I just want to run a better time."

The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of senior Steve Christiansen, Hirsbrunner, senior Alex Barenklau and Moehn will run Saturday. They are the top seed and have a chance to add another medal.

"I definitely got some of the butterflies out of my stomach before tomorrow," Hirsbrunner said.
