PORTAGE - Monroe's baseball team continued its quality start to the season, splitting a doubleheader on the road with Portage Saturday.
Monroe knocked off the Beavers 5-1 behind the stellar pitching effort of junior Mitch Marty. Marty threw a complete game, allowing three hits and four walks while striking out five.
At the plate, Marty was 3-for-4. Taylor Riese, who had the clutch game-winning hit against defending state champion Edgewood Friday evening, was 2-for-4. Kramer Henning was also 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
Monroe scored four runs in to open the top half of the first and added its fifth run in the fifth inning.
Portage won the other game, 14-1. Henning was tagged for seven runs on the mound. Kris Rieder went 2-for-3 at the plate and the Cheesemakers scored their only run in the first.
Monroe (3-1) travels to Fort Atkinson Tuesday.
