MADISON - Monroe senior Silas Setterstrom won a match in the quarterfinals of the Badger South Conference tournament Friday at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium and is still alive for a top-three finish.

After a first-round-bye, Setterstrom defeated Sauk Prairie's Noah Wankerl 6-2, 6-4.

"It was a tough match," Monroe coach Matt Bordner said of Setterstrom. "They were both really close in skill level. It was probably the best match of the day."

With the win, Setterstrom moves on to the semifinals today where he will play No. 1 seed Calvin Schneider of Oregon.

"It's the first time in his career he has made it to the second day of the conference tournament," Bordner said. "It was really nice to see all of his hard work pay off his senior year."

Setterstrom has lost two previous matches to Schneider this year.

"I think Silas is looking forward to the challenge," Bordner said. "He's in a pretty good position. The pressure is really not on him. Being the underdog, he can go out and just play hard and see what happens."

Monroe senior Nick Baumann at No. 2 singles defeated Mike Tenamor in a first-round match 6-2, 6-3. Baumann then lost to top-seeded Charles Donovan of Oregon 6-0, 6-0.

"We are really proud of Nick and his development," Bordner said of Baumann. "I think he can use this as momentum going into subsectionals."

At No. 3 singles, Baraboo's Jake Huffaker beat Monroe's Nathan Smith 6-0, 6-0. Sauk Prairie's Chris Leatherberry at No. 4 singles defeated the Cheesemakers' Quinn Walsh 6-0, 6-4.

Each of Monroe's doubles teams lost first-round matches. Madison Edgewood's Forrest Lynn and Charlie Weitz at No. 1 doubles defeated Monroe seniors Ryan Peterson and Alex Tordoff 6-3, 6-0. At No. 2 doubles, Fort Atkinson's Caleb Brown and Evan Jaime beat Monroe seniors Jacob Kind and Ross Oxenrider 6-3, 4-6, 10-6. Stoughton's No. 3 doubles team of Branden Metzler and Collin Ace defeated the Cheesemakers' Scott Navarro and Landon Knobel 6-0, 6-1.

"Jacob Kind and Ross Oxenrider dropped a tough match that came down to a 10-point match tiebreaker at the end," Bordner said. "They couldn't quite pull it off, but again showed they can compete with some high quality opponents."
