ORLANDO - Monroe senior Chandra McGuire is making the most of playing softball in the Sunshine state.

McGuire went 2-for-2 with two home runs and five RBI to lead the Cheesemakers to a 16-1 win over Newington High School, Conn., at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex Tuesday. Monroe (5-0, 2-0 Badger South) pounded out 14 hits and had five extra-base hits. McGuire helped spark the Cheesemakers with a solo home run in a six-run first inning. With two outs in the second, McGuire hit a grand slam in another six-run inning. The game was called after 2 2/3 innings due to a 15-run rule.

"We continued to thrash the ball against solid pitching," Monroe coach Dale Buvid said. "The wind was blowing out, but we were very impressive offensively. We played very, very well."

Monroe senior Taylor O'Leksy went 3-for-3 with one RBI and Amanda Putz was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Senior Sam Hose was 2-for-3 with one RBI and senior Ellie Grossen went 2-for-4.

Monroe junior Kari Jordan didn't play due to an illness.

Sophomore pitcher Natalie Dillon pitched three innings and gave up just one run on two hits. She struck out two and walked two.

Monroe will play La Crosse Central (3-0) at noon today, April 16 and will then play Kendall, N.Y., at 4 p.m. La Crosse Central was an honorable mention in the Division 1 Wisconsin Fastpitch Coaches Association preseason poll.

"La Crosse Central will be a much tougher game," Buvid said.
