MCFARLAND - The Monroe High School girls tennis team dropped a non-conference dual to McFarland 5-2 Monday.
The Cheesemakers (1-6) were coming off a third-place finish in the Monroe Doubles Invitational Saturday. Picking up wins for the Cheesemakers were senior Eva Priewe at No. 1 singles and sophomore Ashley Placek at No. 3 singles.
"We continued to show improvement," Monroe coach Brad Saugstad said of the match against the Spartans. "Playing on such a windy day is tough, and it really takes experience to learn how to be effective in the wind. McFarland played the wind better than us and just had a little bit stronger shots."
Priewe defeated McFarland's Jackie Silvas 6-3, 6-1. With the win, Priewe improved her record to 5-2.
"Eva played an opponent who was looking to be aggressive, and Eva frustrated her with consistency," Saugstad said. "Eva mixed up her deep and short shots and was aggressive when her opponent set her up. This was one of her first big tests, and she played well."
Placek beat McFarland's Rebekah Severson 6-2, 6-3.
"Ashley hit a lot really good short-angle shots and was in control of the match the entire time," Saugstad said. "Ashley gained some valuable experience at No. 2 singles earlier this season and it paid off."
At No. 2 singles, Monroe senior Katie Demianiuk fought back after a tough first set and lost a three-set match to Shelby Riese 6-0, 2-6, 6-2. McFarland's Berit Spilde at No. 4 singles beat Monroe sophomore Skye Allen 6-2, 6-2.
The Spartans swept all three doubles matches. Elena DiVita and Shareen Ali at No. 1 doubles defeated Monroe sophomores Maggie Setterstrom and Hallie Signer 6-1, 6-2. At No. 2 doubles, McFarland's Nicole Scheffel and Olivia Mueting beat Monroe seniors Hannah Zweifel and Morgan Quinn 6-4, 6-1. McFarland's Jessica Berry and Kendra Wendt at No. 3 doubles beat Monroe junior Liz Skatrud and sophomore Julia Richardson 6-3, 6-4.
Monroe will host Sauk Prairie in a nonconference match today.
"We don't have much time to dwell on this match because we are right back at it against Sauk Prairie," Saugstad said.
