ALBANY - New Glarus-Monticello senior Ryan McCoy continues to break records on his quest to getting back to state.

McCoy ran away with the small schools title at the Baertschi Invitational on Saturday, winning the 5,000-meter race with a time of 15 minutes, 45 seconds, which was about 1:30 ahead of Brodhead-Juda junior Dylan Johnson, who was the large schools champion (17:13).

The Glarner Knights had three runners in the top 10 to outdistance Albany for the team title 40-63. In addition to McCoy, New Glarus-Monticello senior Alexander Yesier finished fifth (17:37) and Caleb Fredrickson took 10th (18:08).

"He's cooking this year like we have never seen him go," New Glarus-Monticello coach Steve Wehrley said. "Ryan is still a competitor. He's still pushing."

Albany sophomore Brennan Bloedel took third (17:20) and sophomore Aaron Johnson finished eighth (18:02) to lead the Comets to a second-place finish.

"I thought we ran well," Albany coach Tony Brewer said. "We had the lead at the two-mile mark. They (New Glarus-Monticello) came on strong at the end. For the three seniors, we knew that was their last meet."

New Glarus-Monticello sophomore John Zuber took 12th (18:17) and Hunter Pratt was 13th (18:19). Albany freshman Tyler Dahl finished 15th (18:25) and senior Johnny Kallgren was 17th (18:26). Chad Helland took 20th (18:32) to round out the top five for the Comets.

"Albany is ranked sixth in the state and they have beat us twice this year," Wehrley said. "This is the first time I have seen our guys set a goal and no matter what, go out and make it happen."

Brewer is having his team gear up for the SWAL meet on Thursday where they will run against second-ranked Darlington.

"We are battling Darlington and Boscobel," Brewer said of the SWAL. "I think New Glarus-Monticello was a good test."

Johnson's win helped propel the Cardinals to seventh place (188). Monroe, ranked No. 7 in the Wisconsin Cross Country Coaches Association Division 2 poll, rested their top eight runners and took last (226) out of 10 teams in the large schools race.

Monroe freshman Derek Christiansen took 26th (18:57) to lead the Cheesemakers. Patrick Hughes finished 41st (19:29) and freshman Jack Schluesche was 46th (19:40). Sophomore Matt Miller finished 55th (19:53) and junior Isaiah Siemers took 58th (20:25).

"This gave some of our younger runners a great opportunity to run in the varsity race," Monroe coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "This is the future of Monroe cross country.

"One of the things we told the guys before the race was the fact that they could all say they got to run in the same race with the best runner in the state of Wisconsin. Kind of a neat story to tell as they get older. We have a lot of respect for Ryan McCoy. He is a true inspiration for all the younger runners."

Brodhead-Juda senior Lucas Wymer finished 34th (19:16) and junior Rodrigo Yescas was 40th (19:25). Junior Justin Krumwiede took 56th (20:02) and freshman Nick Ciabatti was 57th (20:22). Schools are gearing up for conference meets this week.
