MADISON - Brodhead-Juda junior Logan Maurer brought home the bronze medal after taking third place at heavyweight at the WIAA Division 2 state tournament Saturday, March 1 at the Kohl Center.
After getting pinned by Kiel's Matthew Halverson for the second straight year at state, Maurer bounced back. He pinned Catholic Memorial's Sam Gromacki in 1 minute, 50 seconds in the consolation semifinals. He then hung on to beat Wisconsin Lutheran's Quinton Reed 4-2 in the third-place match.
Maurer, ranked No. 1 in the Wisconsin Wrestling Online poll, entered the state meet with just one loss looking to make it to the title match and avenge a loss to Halverson from last year.
"Obviously, after I lost that match, I wasn't satisfied because I didn't achive my goal," Maurer said. "I had to focus the best I could to get the bronze."
Brodhead-Juda coach Tim Colden challenged Maurer after just his second loss of the season came at state.
"I told him we will see what he is made out of," Colden said. "You can tell what a guy is made of by how he reacts after some adversity."
Maurer, a two-time state qualifier, finished with a 48-2 record, which was one win shy of tying Hunter Colden's school record for wins in a season (49). He is second on the school's career wins list (126) within striking distance of Hunter Colden's record (171).
"That (most wins in a career) will be one of my goals," Maurer said. "I'm going for first."
Colden can see Maurer making improvements before his final year of prep wrestling.
"I think the big thing is to just keep wrestling," Colden said. "He has to hit the weight room. He can get even stronger. He has a big frame and he can add even more muscle and he will be just fine."
