Mat Rats win 11 championships

MONROE - Nine members of the host team captured championships at the Monroe Mat Rat Tournament, which featured 322 competitors and more than 20 teams on Sunday at Monroe High School.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of Monroe Mat Rats' co-founder Gavin Breadon's passing. The Monroe Mat Rats had a strong showing at the tournament with 41 wrestlers from the team competing and 11 first place finishes, including over 15 pins.

In the kindergarten through second grade brackets, first places went to Jack Dubach, Liam Hermanson, Brady Schuh, Owen Voegeli and Garrett Voegeli. Corbin Mann and Brevin Rach placed second. Third places went to Louis Armstrong, Dayne Garwell, Allen Wand and Zack Steele. Fourth place was taken by Kyle Black, Cole Buholzer, Isaac Bunker, Nicholas Newcomer, Roderick Rath, Braden Rupnow, Jacob Walker and Clayton Waski.

The third and fourth grade brackets showed strong wrestling with first place finishes for Bodie Minder, Patrick Rielly, Aidan Sweeney and Alex Witt. Caleb Bunker, Garrett Grossen and Max Patterson accomplished second place. Third places went to Luke Dubach, Max Golembiewski, Max Haffele, Kyle Haldiman, and Tristan Teasdale. Brock Hummel battled hard for a fourth place finish wrestling in an older grade and heavyweight bracket.

In our older kids' brackets, for fifth and sixth grade, Tim Andersen and Dempzy Foley took second place, while Wyatt Heimann, Cole Lincicum, and Jack Rogerson took fourth place. Seventh and eighth grade had Traiten Gorr taking first place. Cole Murray finished second place and David Andrews and Mckenzy Foley took third.

Allen Wand also completed on Saturday, Jan. 21 in Fennimore and took fourth place.
