Mat Rats qualify 14 for state

The Monroe Mat Rats on Saturday, March 14, qualified 14 wrestlers for the state tournament.

The Mat Rats had 21 wrestlers participate in regionals at Richland Center and Madison LaFollette. Wrestlers needed to place either first or second to qualify for the state tournament, which will be March 27-28 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.

In the 2000-2001 birth year division, Nick Schumacher took first place and Drake Ingold finished second to qualify for state. Dempzy Foley and Mitchell Quinn both finished third. Patrick Reilly finished 1-2 on the day.

At the Madison La Follette regional, eight wrestlers earned automatic state bids. In the 1994-1995 birth year division, Trevor Gorr took first place and Aaron Hesgard and Kevin Klopfenstein both finished second. In the 1996-1997 birth year, Reave Lincoln captured a title. Tyler Davis and Troy Gorr each finished second.

Traiten Gorr took first place in the 1998-1999 birth year, with Cole Murray finishing third. In the 2000-2001 birth year, Sam Kind finished second place.

Brock Hummel competed in a tournament in Oregon and finished second place in the kindergarten- second grade division.

The youth Folkstyle State Tournament is March 27-28 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison. Youths born between 1994 and 1997 will begin wrestling at 6 p.m. Friday, March 27, and resume at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. Youths born from 1998 to 2001 will begin wrestling at 8:30 a.m. Saturday, March 28, and continue throughout the day.

If some regionals did not have two qualifiers in each weight bracket, then a wrestler from another regional may get a call to wrestle to complete a 16-man bracket. This may include third-place finishers also, if the first or second place qualifier is unable to make the tournament.
