MONROE - The Monroe Mat Rats continue to compete as the season starts winding down, with regional qualifiers coming up. Fourteen Mat Rats competed in two different youth tournaments March 4 at the Verona Classic and Dodgeville Youth tournaments.
At the Verona Classic, 11 Monroe Mat Rats wrestled in an eight-person bracket format based on the year born and weight. Placing first was Jack Dubach, 2005-06, 92-97 pounds. Placing second was Kaydon Proctor, 2011-12, 43-46 pounds. Placing fourth were Tristen Laws, 2009-10, 62-68 pounds; Jaden Leistiko, 2007-08, 62-64 pounds; Payton Weckerly, 2007-08, 86-90 pounds; and Chelsey Gilbert, 2005-06, 152-165 pounds. Placing fifth were Elijah Phillips, 2009-10, 64-66 pounds, and Carson Menehan, 2005-06, 79-83 pounds. Placing sixth was Jaden Clark, 2003-04, 126-130 pounds. Placing eighth were Wyatt Weckerly, 2009-10, 62-68 pounds, and Jace Amacher, 2003-04, 109-119 pounds.
At the Dodgeville Youth Tournament, three Mat Rats wrestled in five-person and four-person round-robin bracket format based on the year born and weight. Placing first was Eli Salzwedel, 2007-08, 63-68 pounds. Placing third was Patrick Harms, 2009-10, 60-66 pounds. Placing fifth was Garrett Minder, 2007-08, 70-73 pounds.
Some Monroe Mat Rats will be wrestling Saturday at the Dominate in the Dells tournament. Regional qualifiers are March 17, where the top two winners in each age and weight class qualify for the State Championships March 23 and 24 at the Alliant Energy Center in Madison.
