NEW GLARUS - The Marshall boys basketball team looked to be running a layup drill as the Cardinals rolled to an 80-58 win over New Glarus Thursday.
The Cardinals (5-6, 1-3 Capitol South) scored on five layups in the fourth quarter as the Glarner Knights had several defensive breakdowns.
"We didn't play any defense," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "We didn't have anyone stop the ball. They (Marshall) are a team that likes to get out and run. We didn't do a good job of getting back."
Marshall used a 12-2 fourth quarter run that featured layups by freshman Cam Ward and two layups by Blake Reine to spark the Cardinals to a 63-47 lead. It was a back-breaking turn of events for the Knights who were playing without senior guard Tyler Dorn, who sprained his ACL against Watertown Luther Prep. Ward scored a game-high 27 points to lead four Cardinals who were in double figures.
Sysko didn't want to speculate on what caused the defensive breakdowns.
"I don't know," he said. "I will have to look at the film. Fifty-eight points should be enough to win a game. We can't give up 80 points."
The Cardinals jumped out to an 8-0 lead sparked by Ward's 3-pointer. The Knights (5-7, 2-3 Capitol South) battled back when junior Evan Hauge hit a 3-pointer that cut the Cardinals' lead to 12-10 with 2 minutes, 49 seconds to go in the first quarter.
New Glarus junior Chris Pickett drilled a 3-pointer about midway through the second quarter that sliced the Cardinals' lead to 22-21. The Cardinals answered with a 7-0 spurt to take an eight-point lead.
New Glarus junior Tyler Kreklow scored a team-high 14 points to lead the Knights. New Glarus senior Kirbe French had a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds).
"Kirbe played better," Sysko said. "It's a level of consistency we need more from him. Hopefully, it's a sign of things to come."
After Reine scored on a layup late in the third quarter to give the Cardinals a 49-40 lead, the Knights had a golden opportunity to cash in. The Knights had a chance to score eight points on the same possession. Pickett scored on a putback and was fouled. He made the free throw to convert the conventional three-point play at the line to cut the lead to 49-43. The Cardinals were called for a technical and Kreklow missed two free throws and the Knights were awarded the ball. New Glarus senior Carlin Moen missed a 3-pointer and the Knights came away with just three points. Ward helped the Cardinals maintain the momentum scoring on a layup to beat the buzzer to push the lead to 53-45 entering the fourth quarter.
The Knights finished 7 of 17 at the free-throw line. Sysko understands the Knights squandered a chance to come back at the end of the third quarter.
"When you get on the line, you have to make the free throws," he said. "We had the guys on the line we wanted. They just didn't go down."
The Knights now must prepare to play at Poynette Jan. 25. Dorn could miss the next six games before he tries to return.
"I'm hoping to return for Darlington," he said.
