Marshall powers past Knights

NEW GLARUS - The top two hitters in Marshall's lineup gave New Glarus fits as the Cardinals swept a doubleheader from the Glarner Knights Saturday.

Marshall's top two hitters, Kigen Mares and Seth Lay, went a combined 12-for-16 to lead the Cardinals to 8-2 and 12-3 wins over the Knights Saturday.

With the losses, New Glarus drops to 0-6, 0-4 Capitol South.

Mares went 2-for-4 with three runs scored in the first game of the twinbill and Lay was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and one RBI. The Cardinals jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning.

New Glarus pitcher Koner French went five innings and gave up five earned runs on eight hits. He struck out eight and walked five. The Knights were limited to just three hits - singles by John Chenoweth and Aaron Nimtz and a double by Jared Carney. Nimtz had one RBI.

In the second game, Lay went 4-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI to lead the Cardinals to the win. Marse went 3-for-5 with three runs scored and Bryce Riege was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two RBI. The Cardinals scored four runs in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

The Knights were again limited to three hits. New Glarus junior Gavin Binger went 1-for-1, Chenoweth was 1-for-3 with two RBI and Dalton Way was 1-for-2.

Carney pitched four innings for the Knights, giving up six runs (four earned runs) on 11 hits. He struck out five and walked three. Andrew Nimtz pitched three innings and gave up six runs (four earned) on seven hits.
