RICHLAND CENTER - The Cheesemakers brought their bats in a non-conference game that will have big sway in regional seeding. Monroe ousted Richland Center on Saturday 13-1 in six innings, thanks to a 21-hit outburst at the plate.
Four players finished 3 for 4 and three others had two hits. Kelsey Erickson was 3 for 4 with two runs, three RBIs and a triple; Kristin McArdle was 3 for 4 with a run and two RBIs; Alyssa Montgomery finished with three hits and two runs and Kaylee Craigo had three hits, two runs and three RBIs. Ellie Grossen finished 2 for 4 with a triple, Chandra McGuire was 2 for 4 with a double and Heather Barta ended up 2 for 3 with a double for the Cheesemakers.
"It was a great game by all," said Monroe assistant coach Noel Herbst, who was filling in for head coach Dale Buvid, whose son was graduating from college. "This was important for seeding."
Becca Armstrong allowed just two walks and two hits in six innings while striking out four.
Monroe scored one run in the first, added four in the second, and another run in the fifth to make it 6-0. Richland Center responded in the bottom of the fifth with a run, but then the Cheesemakers rattled off seven runs in the top of the sixth to put the 10-run mercy rule into effect.
Monroe now faces a daunting task - due to weather postponements earlier in the season, the Cheesemakers will be playing seven games over the next eight days. First is a doubleheader today at home against Waterford and a conference game Tuesday at Stoughton. The rest of the week includes a home game against Baraboo on Friday, the third attempt at the Monroe Tournament on Saturday, and then a game at home against Oregon on May 23.
