MONROE — The WIAA recently released the individual boys tennis state brackets, where Monroe’s No. 1 doubles duo Ryan Mathiason and Wes Saunders learned they will play Nicolet’s Al Vizgaitis and Jack Schultz at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, May 30. The Knight pair are the 10-seed of the tournament.

“We put in a seed request for Ryan and Wes, but unfortunately it was a crowded top half of the D1 brackets,” Monroe head coach Matt Bordner said. “Nicolet will be quite the challenge for our guys, but it’ll be a lot of fun seeing how we can do. I think we’re playing great tennis right now, so hopefully we can keep that going at Nielsen.”

With the release of the brackets, No. 1 singles player Matthew Setterstrom learned his special qualifier request was denied. Although he was a 2023 state qualifier, Setterstrom suffered a back injury late in the season that led to a fourth-place finish in the Rock Valley Conference tournament and early exit in sectionals.

“He didn’t have his regular serve down the back stretch of our season due to a back injury and was limited to an underhand serve, so that definitely made things tough,” Bordner said. “He had a great season though and will be a huge part of our lineup again next year.”

The boys individual tennis tournament will be held May 30-June 1 at Nielsen Stadium in Madison. Spectators can follow a live bracket on
