MONTICELLO — The ninth annual Six Rivers Conference All-Star Senior Showdown was held at Monticello High School on Friday, June 27. All proceeds generated from the match were donated to American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison. The East All-Stars and West All-Stars agreed to play three sets.
The first set was extremely competitive as neither team got more than a three point lead. Kaylie Oimoen of Barneveld had a floating kill followed by an ace to put the East out in front, 7-6. Kierra Cleasby of Pecatonica scored an ace to put the East ahead 16-15, then Morgen Freeman of Belmont tied it at 17-17 with a kill. Hope Haase of Potosi dropped in an ace to give the West a brief 19-18 lead. Anna Hennessey of Highland and Ellie Modaff of Albany got a kill and Modaff delivered an ace and tied the score at 24-24, meaning that the winning team must win by two points. The West scored the final two points to win the first set 26-24.
In the second set, Madelyn Cleary of Pecatonica got a kill and Anna Ellinger of Albany served an ace to give the East an early 3-2 lead. With Cleary on the serve, the East built up a 20-14 lead, capped by Oimoen’s kill. Cleasby’s kill gave the East a 24-16 lead and when the West had a return sail out of bounds, the West claimed a 25-18 win in set two.
The third set saw the East dominate early as Cleasby got a pair of kills and Oimoen scored an ace, giving the East a 5-1 lead. Another kill by Cleasby and a kill by Ellinger put the East ahead 11-2. The West mounted a comeback as Kate Tarrell of Highland and Reghan Zinkle of River Ridge each got an ace to pull the West to within 16-14. Kills by Freeman and Tarrell closed the gap to 22-21 with the East out in front. Oimoen’s kill gave the East a 24-23 lead, but that would be the last point for the East as the West tied it at 24-24 and closed it out on a kill by Zinkle to win 26-24.
