SOUTH WAYNE — The second-seeded Black Hawk Warriors pressured Juda into submission in the opening round of the WIAA Division 5 girls basketball playoffs Feb. 23, winning 54-16.
In the first half, the Warriors opened the game on an 8-0 run and led 26-8 at halftime. The offense was methodical for Black Hawk, as the players were patient in finding open holes in the defense and not rushing shots. The Warriors hit four 3-pointers in the frame, with juniors Tara Wellnitz and Raylin Peterson knocking down two apiece.
Wellnitz led all scorers with 22 points, including 12 in the first half. Tatum Baumgartner had 10 points, as did Jaliyah Collins. Peterson finished with eight points.
Juda senior Anna Skoumal led her squad with seven points, and Libby Jordan added five.
Black Hawk (18-6) hosts Burlington Catholic Central (13-12) in the second round Feb. 25, with the winner moving onto the Feb. 26 regional final against either Fall River (14-11) or Argyle (14-10).
Pecatonica 58, Johnson Creek 53
JOHNSON CREEK — The Vikings pulled off a first-round upset Feb. 23 in the WIAA Division 5 playoffs.
Ninth-seeded Pecatonica (12-13) led No. 8-seed Johnson Creek 33-24 at halftime. Missed free throws down the stretch kept the game interesting. The Vikings were just 6-for-15 (40%) from the line. Meanwhile, the Bluejays (11-14) were 14-for-18 (77.7%) from the charity stripe in the second half.
Tessa Green led Pecatonica with 16 points. Nivaeh Gross had 11 points, Chloe Schraepfer 10, Anna Tisch nine and Diana Hendrickson and Lexi Peterson each added six.
The Vikings advance to face top-seeded Albany (20-4) on Feb. 25, with the winner advancing to the Feb. 26 regional final against either Rio (13-12) or Barneveld (7-18).
Burlington Catholic Central 52, Monticello 43
BURLINGTON — The Ponies saw their season come to a close with a first-round loss in the WIAA Division 5 playoffs. Monticello (7-15) fell behind 25-14 at halftime.
Ellie Gustafson led the way with 21 points for Monticello. Sarah Brokopp had seven points and Karlee Wilkins six.
Madeline Von Rabenau led Catholic Central with 18 points.
