NEW GLARUS — The Sugar River Raiders took their first loss of the season in nonconference boys soccer on Thursday, Sept. 4, losing to the Edgewood Crusaders 3-0 at New Glarus.
Edgewood held a 1-0 halftime lead and the score stayed that way until the final five minutes when the Crusaders came up with two goals to deny the Raiders any chance at a comeback.
The Raiders had 10 shots on goal and goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin had nine saves for Sugar River.
Meanwhile, the Sugar River boys soccer team has earned a United Soccer Coaches Team Academic Award for the 2024-2025 academic year. The award is for exceptional academic performance as a team for the year.
Sugar River Raiders Wins Big Foot Soccer Championship
BIG FOOT — The Sugar River Raiders won the Big Foot boys soccer championship for the second year in a row by going 3-0 in the tournament on Saturday, Sept. 6 with victories over Lake Geneva Badger and Waterford in the quarterfinals and semifinals and over Lake Mills in the championship.
Against Lake Geneva Badger (a D2 school), the Raiders won 2-1. In the first half, Drew Brueggemann scored a goal with an assist by Tikeh Tazeh at 23:33. In the second half, Wyatt Coon got what proved to be the winning goal on an assist by Kaleb Weber at 44:04. Goalkeeper Taydon DeRouin had four saves while Sugar River got 13 shots on goal.
In the semifinal, the Raiders faced Waterford, another Division 2 school and won, 2-0. The Raiders got both of their goals in the first half. Drew Brueggemann scored a goal on Tikeh Tazeh’s assist at 9:43 to give Sugar River a 1-0 lead. About five minutes later, Adam Johnson scored a goal on a corner kick by Brueggemann, giving the Raiders a 2-0 advantage that stood up. DeRouin registered four saves as the Raiders fired 11 shots on goal.
The Raiders played the Lake Mills L-Cats for the championship and took home the first-place trophy with a 3-1 win. Brueggemann opened the scoring for Sugar River with a goal assisted by Tazeh at 3:49 to give the Raiders a 1-0 lead. The Raiders made it 2-0 on Tazeh’s goal assisted by Brueggemann less than a minute later. The Raiders got some breathing room in the second half on a goal by Brueggemann assisted by Kaleb Weber at 36:19. DeRouin had five saves for the Raiders, who had 15 shots on goal.
Sugar River (5-1-1) was scheduled to play Platteville-Lancaster in nonconference action on Tuesday, Sept. 9 at Belleville before traveling to Columbus for a Capitol Conference match Sept. 11.
