NEW GLARUS —  Seniors AC Strok and Grace Nommensen earned the WIAA scholar athlete awards during New Glarus’s Senior Awards Night on Wednesday, May 10.

Each year, member high schools of the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association (WIAA) are invited to nominate one boy and one girl for Scholar Athlete honors. The program was launched in 1984 to demonstrate the positive impact of interscholastic athletic activities.

To qualify for WIAA Scholar Athlete recognition, a nominee must have earned at least four varsity letters through the first half of his or her senior year and must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.

Strok’s impact as an student-athlete at New Glarus has been impressive. In his senior year of basketball, Strok was named the Capitol Conference South Player of the Year. Strok has been a team MVP, an All-Conference player, and a Team Captain for both New Glarus-Monticello football and New Glarus boys basketball, and will be going on to play basketball at Edgewood next year.  Before he puts on a new uniform, though, Strok will represent New Glarus one last time over the summer, when he participates in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association-WBCA All Star Game. As a student, Strok earned accumulated a 3.99 GPA.

Nommensen has a decorated story of success as a student-athlete at New Glarus. A four-year starter for the New Glarus volleyball team, Nommensen was a three-time MVP, team captain, First-Team All-Conference selection, and Conference Player of the Year runner-up. For New Glarus girls basketball, Nommensen started for three years, and played a key role on the program’s back-to-back Conference Championship seasons, including the 2022-23 team that finished 24-1. For Sugar River Track and Field, Nommensen has advanced to the WIAA State Meet in multiple events for two consecutive years, been named Captain, and earned All-Conference Honors. In addition to her athletic success, Nommensen accumulated a 3.90 GPA. Next year, Nommensen will compete for the UW-La Crosse volleyball program.
