MONROE — Reedsburg swept Monroe 7-0 Sept. 9, but he generally young and inexperienced Cheesemakers are beginning to string some good rallies together.

“Reedsburg had a very experienced team and while our girls battled, it just wasn’t enough in any of the flights,” Monroe coach Matt Bordner said.

At No. 1 singles, Kylie Miller lost to Gabby Weis 6-4, 6-3.

“Kylie had an opponent that was fairly similar to herself. She did a good job of keeping it in play, and had a really strong backhand. Kylie found ways to generate points and continues to improve, but her opponent really did a nice job of moving Kylie around at the baseline and forcing Kylie to hit just a few too many difficult balls,” Bordner said.

Alicia Brunton fell at No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-2.

“Alicia hung in there at No. 2 singles which was great to see. She tried working the net and putting pressure on her opponent, but struggled a bit with execution on some of those points. I think for her, it’s all about finding ways to grind out the ‘pressure points’ to start getting more games,” Bordner said.

Bella Brunton (No. 3 singles) and Vaughn Barker (No. 4 singles) were swept 6-0, 6-0.

In the doubles matches, Monroe’s No. 1 duo of Lydia Setterstrom and Sydney Conway lost 6-0, 6-1.

At No. 2 doubles, Morgan Johnson and Melena Brunton fought hard in the first set but fell apart in the second, losing 7-5, 6-0.

“I was really proud of the first set from our No. 2 doubles team. We were down 1-5, and battled back to get it to 5-6. We certainly had our opportunities, but couldn’t force the tiebreaker,” Bordner said. “The second set was definitely a letdown, but it’ll be a good learning moment for this team to understand that they can always work back into a set, and also to make sure they start faster as well.”

Allison Wunschel and Bre Giasson lost at No. 3 doubles 6-3, 6-3.

“(They) played a solid match but again just couldn’t find a way to flip the score in our favor. I think Bre and Allison have pretty high ceilings at #3 doubles and so I’m hoping to see them continue to work hard and develop as we get into the thick of our conference season here,” Bordner said.
