Redbirds throttle Vikings; Cards stay unbeaten

ORFORDVILLE — In a matchup of programs going in two different directions, the fourth-ranked Darlington Redbirds cruised to a quick, methodical victory over the rebuilding Parkview-Albany Vikings in Week 5, winning by a rare blowout mark of 87-0. 

Darlington scored three touchdowns in the first quarter, and tacked on seven more in the second to go ahead 73-0 at halftime.

Eight different Redbirds had rushing touchdowns. Cadyn Burbach completed two passes — both first-quarter touchdowns — for 77 yards. Will Murray had a 59-yard TD catch, and Carver Fitzsimons added one from 11 yards out. Breylin Goebel also had a 16-yard TD run in the first.

Talan Crist had two TD runs in the second quarter, while Tye Crist, Ross Crist, Connor Larson and Maddox Goebel all had a TD run. Taggart Gille had a TD run in the third and Isaac Christ added a 37-yard score in the fourth.

Darlington had 377 yards on 31 carries, and 447 yards on 33 total plays of offense. The Redbirds forced one fumble and an interception. 

In Week 5, Darlington (4-1, 3-0 SWAL) hosts Mineral Point (2-3, 2-1). Meanwhile, Parkview-Albany (0-5, 0-3) will try to find better luck against another winless team, Cuba City (0-5, 0-3).


Lakeside Lutheran 52, New Glarus 21

NEW GLARUS — After a scoreless first quarter, Lakeside Lutheran broke free for 17 points in the second, including hitting a 25-yard field goal with three seconds left before halftime of their Week 5 game Sept. 16. 

In the third, New Glarus-Monticello was outscored 28-8, putting on the running clock with 1:01 left in the frame. Max Marty hit AC Strok for an 85-yard TD pass at the 5:56 mark for the Knights’ first score. Marty ran forward for a 1-yard score at the 8:52 mark of the fourth quarter to turn off the running clock, making it 45-15. LL scored again with 5:16 left. Four minutes later, Matt Roth hit Andrew Sarbacker for a 12-yard TD.

Jackson Eyler led the Knights with 41 rushing yards. Marty was 22 of 34 passing for 328 yards. Strok had four catches for 99 yards. Ethan Friedrich finished with 121 yards on 11 grabs, while Cade Thayer hauled in four passes for 94 yards.

The Knights are 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in the Capitol. They will have to win out to guarantee a spot in the postseason. In Week 6, New Glarus-Monticello travels to Lake Mills (3-2, 1-2).


River Ridge 47, Pecatonica-Argyle 7

PATCH GROVE — The Vikings fell behind 21-0 after the first quarter and 41-0 by halftime of their Six Rivers game Sept. 16 in Week 5.

The Wildcats had over 350 yards of offense, including 264 on the ground on 33 total carries. Nine players ran the ball. 

The loss guarantees Pecatonica-Argyle to finish below .500 on the regular season. Next week the Vikings host Potosi-Cassville on Saturday, Sept. 24. 


Also in Week 5, Brodhead-Juda (5-0, 3-0 SWC) defeated River Valley (0-5, 0-3) 41-0. The Cardinals host Dodgeville (3-2, 1-2) on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m.
