Redbirds replace four starters
Ashlynn Norgard
Ashlynn Norgard is one of three seniors returning to the Darlington softball team this season.

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds faced adversity in 2022, winning just one game in conference and two games overall. Their victories came in two high-scoring games — a 15-9 win over Monticello-New Glarus and a 12-9 win over Fennimore.

Darlington lost four starters from its 2022 roster: Greta Volkening (First-Team All-Conference), Josie Thomas, Mila Gille and Brenna Grossen.

The remaining five starters who return this year are seniors Cayla Golackson, Ashlynn Norgard and Jaylyn Schwartz, junior Sophie Wiegel and sophomores Lylah Norgard and Ella Winslow.

As a result, head coach Molly Rice will look to some newcomers and freshmen to contribute.

“Our biggest challenge will be learning how to win games,” Rice said. “We will also have to fill four starting positions this season, so we are looking for some girls to step into big roles.”

Understanding her roster, Rice’s goals remain simple: improve and compete.

“The goal is to be competitive every single game,” Rice said. “As the season progresses, I would like to see the players improve their skills and also increase their confidence.”
