Redbirds, Black Hawk, Cardinals pick up wins

LIVINGSTON — The Redbirds improved to 3-1 on the season with a 38-0 blowout of Iowa-Grant Sept. 13.

Braden Davis threw two touchdown passes and Cayden Rankin added another for Darlington, which improves to 1-1 in the SWAL. Davis was 8 of 16 passing for 135 yards and had an interception. Rankin was 2 for 2 for 29 yards. Hunter Hardyman had two catches for 78 yards and two touchdowns, while Easton Evenstad added a 12-yard TD catch.

On the ground, Carson Lobdell had 12 carries for 91 yards, while Wyat Bredeson had 86 yards and a score on eight touches. Davis added an 8-yard TD run.

Darlington led 12-0 after the first quarter, and went into halftime with a comfortable 26-0 advantage. The Redbirds added two more touchdowns in the third quarter to start the running clock.

Defensively, Darlington allowed just 130 passing yards while picking off two passes. Iowa-Grant was led in rushing by Zachary Winkler, who registered just five yards.


MPGL 22, Parkview-Albany 6

MONTELLO — The Vikings defense picked off two passes, but Montello-Princeton-Green Lake build a sizable lead that couldn’t be overcome in Week 4.

The home team took an 8-0 lead late in the first quarter and then recorded a safety in the third to go up 10-0. Parkview-Albany fell behind 16-0 early in the fourth quarter when MPGL quarterback Buxton Toutant ran in a score from 9-yards out.

With 2:42 left in the game, Charlie Vogt connected on a 41-yard touchdown pass to Nevin Crane to put the Vikings on the board. MPGL scored one last time with 29 seconds left to close the door.

Maverick Kundert had 102 yards rushing to lead the Vikings.


Lodi 44, New Glarus-Monticello 7

NEW GLARUS — Mason Martinson was 10 for 27 passing with a touchdown and two interceptions for the Glarner Knights.

Lodi took an early 3-0 lead in the first quarter on a 25-yard field goal, but NGM took a 7-3 advantage early in the second quarter when Martinson connected with Connor Siegenthaler from 7-yards out.

Lodi bounced right back and scored twice more to take a 16-7 lead headed into the locker rooms at halftime.

The second half was all-Blue Devils. Lodi scored three rushing TDs in the third quarter to go up 37-7, and a 21-yard score in the fourth by Ethyn Meyer closed out the game.


Black Hawk-Warren 35, Waterloo 0

SOUTH WAYNE — The location of where the game was played didn’t matter to the Warriors. After heavy rains and flooding made the Warren field unplayable, the Week 4 nonconference game was moved to South Wayne.

The Warriors went up 14-0 on the Pirates in the first quarter and led 28-0 at halftime. 

Ethan Williams was 8 of 10 passing for 134 yards and a score. Cayden Milz had 124 yards rushing and a touchdown on 13 carries and added three catches for 60 yards and another score. Nick Whitcomb had three catches for 55 yards for Black Hawk-Warren. Cody Blosch had 48 yards and a score on the ground, while Jaylen Rufenacht had 84 yards and two scores rushing the pigskin.

Defensively, Williams and Milz each had an interception.


Brodhead-Juda 21, Jefferson 13

JEFFERSON — Braden Cook had two fourth-quarter touchdowns for the Cardinals, which held on to pick up a big road win in Week 4.

Both teams traded possessions throughout the first half until Brodhead-Juda’s Cade Walker connected with Conner Green for a 7-yard TD with 1:31 left before halftime. 

The Eagles tied it late in the third when Dean Neff punched through the defensive front for a 1-yard score to tie it at 7. 

Moments into the fourth quarter, Cook broke free on a 34-yard run to put the Cardinals back in the lead at 14-7. Jefferson scored less than 40 seconds later on a 78-yard run from Jeffery Zeh, but the extra point by Carson Fairfield was unsuccessful, leaving Brodhead-Juda in the drivers’ seat.

Cook then barreled in from 4-yards out with 7:11 left, and a successful PAT put Brodhead-Juda ahead 21-13. The Cardinals defense was up to the task to close out the game, helping the program move to 2-2 on the season.


River Ridge 14, Pecatonica-Argyle 0

ARGYLE — The Vikings dropped a tight contest to unbeaten River Ridge in Week 4.

The Timberwolves went up 6-0 in the second quarter when Logan Drone connected on a 7-yard pass with Cole Crubel.

Neither team scored until the 7:50 mark in the fourth quarter when Crubel threw an 11-yard TD pass to Archie Cooley. 

Flooding of the Pecatonica River forced the game out of Blanchardville.
