MADISON — The WIAA announced Nov. 2 that Madison Edgewood’s football team used an ineligible player all season and would subsequently vacate all wins, as well as be replaced in the Division 4 playoffs.
The Crusaders were undefeated in 11 games, including defeating Monroe in Week 9, 31-28 to claim the Rock Valley Conference Championship. Edgewood most recently defeated Kewaskum 40-0 in Level 2 of the playoffs. Kewaskum players were scheduled to turn in their equipment Nov. 2 when news came down that the school was re-inserted into the playoffs and will face Columbus on Nov. 6.
Edgewood has appealed the ruling, with the WIAA Board of Control set to hear the school’s appeal Nov. 4.
“Earlier today, Edgewood High School was notified by the WIAA of an alleged eligibility violation with their football team. We have filed an immediate appeal with the WIAA, and are reviewing our legal options,” the school released in a statement Nov. 2.
Crusaders coach Jesse Norris issued his own statement Nov. 2, “We were stunned and devastated by the allegations that we used an ineligible player this season. The athlete in question was granted eligibility in March 2021. We acted in good faith with the understanding that eligibility was obtained. I feel terrible for our administration, parents, my staff, and most importantly our athletes. They have worked incredibly hard for every opportunity granted to them. They have battled through adverse situations all season and deserve the opportunities that they have earned.
“We have faith in the process and look forward to continuing to work with the WIAA in resolving this matter.”
If Edgewood’s appeal fails and all wins are vacated, Monroe would claim the Rock Valley Championship for the second straight season.
