LAKE MILLS — A draw and a win gave Sugar River the four points it needed to clinch an outright Capitol Conference championship. The Raiders tied Cambridge-Deerfield 2-2 Oct. 14, then decimated Lakeside Lutheran 7-1 the following night to grab ahold of the crown.
Sugar River (11-6-1, 7-1-1 Capitol) led the league table with 22 points. Wisconsin Heights-Barneveld was second with 19, while Lodi, Watertown Luther Prep and Lake Mills each had 18.
In the 7-1 win over Lakeside Lutheran, Sugar River took a 4-1 lead at halftime thanks to a hat trick by Carter Siegenthaler. Breckin Faber also scored in the opening 45 minutes for the Raiders. Siegenthaler, Faber, Charlie Douma and Downing each had an assist.
In the second half, Downing scored off a pass from Faber, and then Siegenthaler celebrated his fourth goal of the game, also off a pass from Faber. Logan Niesen had the final goal for Sugar River.
Julian Lutz and Cam Kleighboer split time in net and each had three saves.
In the 2-2 draw at Cambridge, the Raiders received a penalty kick goal from Douma, and later in the half Downing assisted Faber with another goal. Cambridge-Deerfield scored two penalty kick goals — one in the first half, and another in the second half.
Sugar River was set to cap the regular season with nonconference game against Edgewood Oct. 17. The Raiders host Cambridge-Deerfield in the WIAA Division 3 playoffs Oct. 24.
