BELLEVILLE — Sugar River opened its season with a bang. The Raiders knocked off Evansville in the boys soccer season-opener 4-1 thanks to four first half goals Aug. 23.
“(The) boys played extremely well tonight against a strong Evansville team,” Sugar River coach Kyle Webber said.
Jack Gentilli got the ball rolling for Sugar River, scoring in the sixth minute to make it 1-0. A handball in the box allowed for a penalty kick, which was saved, but Gentilli put in the rebound to put the Raiders on the board first.
Justin Knoebl scored in the 22nd minute off of a deflected free-kick from Gentilli. Webber said that a great passing sequence led to Jacob Kratz scoring in the 28th minute on an assist from Nathan Downing on a back-post pass.
Jaden Kreklow took on multiple defenders and buried a goal in the 44th minute as the Raiders took a commanding 4-0 lead into halftime. Gentilli added an assist for Sugar River in the half.
Evansville’s lone goal came in the 73rd minute of the second half on a penalty kick.
Julian Lutz had two saves for the Raiders, which on offense had 18 shots, including 10 on goal and four corners.
Sugar River 11, Janesville Parker 0
JANESVILLE — The Raiders made it to 2-0 on the season with a thumping of Janesville Parker Aug. 25.
Sugar River scored nine first half goals in the rout and only allowed one shot on goal defensively.
Jack Gentilli had three goals for the Raiders, which also got a hat trick from Charlie Douma, two scores from Connor DeLorme, and a goal each from Jack Nolden, Bryson Jelle and Justin Knoebl. Knoebl had three assists for the Raiders, which also got assists from Jelle, Nolden, Tyler Lueschow and Austin Leibundgut.
Monroe 3, Dodgeville-Mineral Point 1
DODGEVILLE — The Cheesemakers opened the season with a win Aug. 23 thanks to two goals from Alex Barradas.
Barradas scored at the 20:30 mark on a pass from Jahir Valentin in the first half to give Monroe a 1-0 lead headed into the break.
Victor Vasquez scored right out of the gates in the second half at the 46-minute mark on a pass from Valentine to make it 2-0. Dodgeville-Mineral Point scored in the 52nd minute, but Barradas punched in his second goal of the game off an assist from Charlie Frehner to cap the scoring.
Monroe had 14 shots on goal and Cheesemaker goaltender punched away nine on defense.
