LODI — The Sugar River Raiders continued their impressive season with a 7-0 throttling of conference foe Lodi Oct. 4.

“Tough conference game in wet and muddy conditions,” Sugar River coach Kyle Webber said. “Both teams played very hard. (We) did a good job of passing and moving on the field.”

The Raiders (11-1-1, 8-0 Capitol) scored five goals in the first half to bury the game and then added to more in the second half for good measure.

Breckin Faber scored the opening goal of the contest in the 11th minute on a soft touch off a free kick from Jack Gentilli. In the 26th minute, Justin Knoebl put the ball in the net off of a corner kick from Connor DeLorme and Gentilli scored unassisted in the 31st minute with a shot from the outside. Not long after, in the 33rd minute, Nathan Downing made it 4-0 tapped in a goal off a touch from teammate Owen Odegard. Faber added his second goal in the 42nd minute off with an assist coming from Logan Winklepleck on a cross.

Thursday’s Monroe soccer game changed

MONROE — Monroe’s boys soccer regular season finale scheduled for Thursday at Portage has been cancelled and will not be made up. The Cheesemakers will now play a road game at Lake Mills at 6:45 p.m. instead.

WIAA Division 2 regionals begin Oct. 18. Seeding has not been completed, but Monroe will compete in the Mount Horeb section alongside Sugar River, Evansville and Badger Conference rivals Edgewood and Mount Horeb.

In the second half, Jaden Kreklow scored off of a penalty kick in the 62nd minute and Garrett James set up David Murray’s thunderous boot from inside the 18-yard-line in the 76th minute.

Sugar River put 23 shots on goal while Lodi was locked down to just five shots on goal. Raiders goalkeeper Julian Lutz had five saves.

“Julian Lutz and his defense did a stellar job of keeping Lodi (7-6-1, 2-4-1) out of the net,” Webber said.

The Raiders had a final conference game scheduled for Tuesday against Lakeside Lutheran (7-6, 5-3). A win would give the Raiders sole possession of the Capitol Conference crown for the season. Sugar River’s final regular season match is a nonconference game slated for Thursday at Mount Horeb (5-9).

In the River Valley Invite Oct. 6, Monroe defeated the host school 1-0 off a second half goal from Alex Barradas. In the second game of the day against Richland Center, the Cheesemakers (4-11-2, 0-6 Badger South) played to a 1-1 draw.
