NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights blew a two-score lead in the final five minutes and lost to Columbus in a nonconference game Aug. 31 in overtime, 32-26.

New Glarus-Monticello led 19-0 at halftime, and a 23-yard touchdown pass from Connor Siegenthaler to Trevor Gassman put the Knights ahead 26-14 with just over 11 minutes to play. Columbus scored on an 18-yard pass from quarterback Joe Morris to wideout Jevin Burbach with 4:36 to play. The two connected again with just 13 seconds later on an 8-yard strike. The Cardinals missed the extra point to send the game into overtime.

Columbus scored on its first possession of the extra frame. New Glarus-Monticello, however, was stopped on fourth down.

Siegenthaler was 18 of 31 through the air for 191 yards and two touchdowns. He also had two interceptions and 23 rushing yards. Zach Feller led the Knights with 79 yards rushing on 18 carries. Gassman had 105 receiving yards and two touchdowns on nine catches and Darris Schuett had 70 yards on seven catches. 

New Glarus-Monticello (1-2) plays at Mauston (2-1) in Week 4 in another nonconference affair.

Cuba City 27, Darlington 20

CUBA CITY — The Cubans scored 13 unanswered points in the second half to take a big conference win against the Redbirds Aug. 31.

Darlington (1-2, 0-1 SWAL) led 20-14 at halftime and out-gained Cuba City (1-2, 1-0) in total yardage 358-309.

Carson Evenstad had seven carries for 52 yards, including a 23-yard touchdown scamper in the first quarter that put the Redbirds up 6-0. Darlington quarterback Blake Whalen then had a three-yard touchdown run of his own in the second before connecting with Stryker Fitzsimons on a 73-yard passing score.

Fitzsimons had 98 yards receiving on just two catches, while Evenstad had three catches for 35 yards. Whalen was 7 of 12 passing for 103 yards. Cayden Rankin had 55 yards on the ground on six totes for the Redbirds.

Darlington hosts Mineral Point (2-1, 1-0) in Week 4.

Jefferson 14, Evansville-Albany 13

JEFFERSON — A late comeback by the Blue Devils came up short Aug. 31. Trailing 14-0 early in the fourth quarter, Evansville-Albany finally founds some offense.

The Devils scored from 78-yards out on a 7-play drive to bring it to within a score, and after forcing a three-and-out punt, scored again from 62 yards out on 11 plays. Evansville-Albany opted to go for two and the win, but Ty Severson’s pass was incomplete.

Severson finished 4 of 14 for 49 yards with an interception through the air and added another 63 yards rushing on seven carries. Severson connected on touchdown passes with Jaden O’Bel and Davonte McAlister.

Evansville-Albany had 228 yards of offense while allowing 302 yards to Jefferson, which got 163 yards rushing from quarterback Ryan Brost and 116 yards from running back Nolan Klawitter.

In other area action Aug. 31, Brodhead-Juda lost to Edgerton 30-7 and Pecatonica-Argyle defeated Benton-Scales Mound 49-6. Black Hawk’s Week 3 matchup against New Lisbon was cancelled.
