Ponies, Warriors split weekend results

SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors opened conference play with a 35-27 win over the Monticello Ponies on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Black Hawk had just a one-point lead at halftime but rallied in the second to outscore Monticello 22-15 for the win.

Jaliyah Collins recorded a double-double with 13 points and a team-leading 18 rebounds. Raylin Peterson also scored in double figures with 14 points. On the boards, Hailey Wellnitz grabbed 11 rebounds. 

Molly Olson was the leading scorer for Monticello with eight points, going 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Jaden Zuber and Ellie Gustafson chipped in six points each, as Zuber made the only 3-point shot for the Ponies.

Neither team shot well from beyond the arc, as Black Hawk was 0-for-7 while Monticello was 1-for-20. At the free-throw line, the teams were evenly matched, with the Warriors making seven of 14 and the Ponies eight of 14.


PRAIRIE DU CHIEN 68, black hawk 26

PRAIRIE DU CHIEN — After opening conference on a high note, the Warriors dropped a nonconference road game to the Blackhawks.

Maddy Lange finished with a team-leading 10 points — the only player in double figures. She and Collins grabbed six rebounds each, followed by Wellnitz with five. While the Warriors went 5-for-8 from the free throw line, their 3-point shooting continued to struggle, as they went 1-for-7 from beyond the arc. 


MONTICELLO 57, SENECA 30

WISCONSIN DELLS — With the larger atmosphere at the Just a Game Fieldhouse in the Wisconsin Dells, Monticello rebounded for win over Seneca on Saturday, Dec. 17.

“It was a fun night with all the girls contributing something to the fun,” head coach Mark Gustafson said. 

The Ponies perimeter shooting improved, as the team made seven 3-pointers. Dalana Trumpy and Ellie Gustafson had two each, while Zuber, Olson and Karlee Wilkins each had one. Trumpy finished with a team-leading 25 points, followed by Ellie Gustafson with 14. 

Kendra Chambers was the only player in double figures for Seneca with 11 points. The next highest scorer was Jorja Clark with eight.


BRODHEAD 59, EAST TROY 44

EAST TROY — The Cardinals added another one to the win column, defeating conference opponent East Troy on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Brodhead had a slim 22-20 lead at the half but broke away for 37 points in the second half for the win.

Abbie Dix led all scorers with 16 points. Taetum Hoesly and Alexis Kammerer also scored in double figures with 15 and 12 points, respectively. Alecia Dahl chipped in eight points, while Makenna Schooff tallied seven. The sixth scorer for the Cardinals was Addison Yates with one made free throw.

The duo of Lauren Lindow and Amya Pluess led East Troy with 11 points each. The next highest scorer was Aubrey Vinney with eight points.


BARNEVELD 65, PECATONICA 46

BARNEVELD — The Vikings dropped their first Six Rivers East Conference game to the Eagles on Thursday, Dec. 15.

Pecatonica trailed by just six at the half, but Barneveld scored 40 points in the second half to run away with the victory.

“Tonight, I thought the girls played well three quarters of the game,” Pecatonica head coach Linda Hendrickson said. “We just didn’t finish strong the last five minutes or so. … I can see the improvements in the girls every game, and as a coach, that is what you want.”

Diana Hendrickson and Anna Tisch led the Vikings with 11 points each. Chloe Schraepfer also scored in double digits with 10 points. She had two 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Barneveld also had three players in double figures: Iz Durst (16), Hannah Esch (14) and Shelbi Marx (10).

Each team made nine free throws — Barneveld in 13 attempts and Pecatonica in 12.
