Ponies unbeaten in Six Rivers East

MONTICELLO — The Ponies capped an unbeaten season and their first conference championship in seven years with a four-game win over Pecatonica Oct. 14. Monticello, ranked No. 4 in the state in Division 4, finishes the regular season 20-1 overall and 12-0 in the Six Rivers East.

The host Ponies lost the first set 22-55, but rallied, dominating the second set 25-9 before taking Games 3 and 4 25-22, 25-21. Ellie Gustafson led the way with 25 kills, 12 digs and five blocks for Monticello. Hannah Clark finished with six kills and 10 digs, while Kelsy Grant tallied 37 assist and seven aces. Macey Grant added seven kills.

Tessa Green led Pecatonica with seven kills, three blocks, two aces and four assists. Chloe Schraepfer added three kills, an ace, eight assists and 10 digs. Lexi Peterson finished the night with five kills and five blocks. Siri Thronson added eight blocks.

Monticello has a first round bye in the WIAA Division 4 postseason and will host the winner of Albany and Fall River Oct. 21 in the regional semifinals. Pecatonica hosts Seneca in the first round Oct. 19, with the winner traveling to top-seeded Highland.

In other volleyball action from Oct. 14, Riverdale defeated Darlington 3-1. Argyle at Juda was canceled hours before the match.


Brodhead second at RVC Tournament

EDGERTON — Regular season Rock Valley Conference champion McFarland cemented its status at the top of the league table with a rousing victory at the RVC Tournament Oct. 16. Brodhead, which was second in the regular season, was also second at the tournament. Edgerton was third.

The Cardinals defeated East Try in its quarterfinal matchup, then rallied to beat Edgerton in the semifinals, 22-25, 25-16, 15-10. In the championship, McFarland soundly defeated the Cardinals 25-9, 25-13.

Abbie Dix led the Cardinals on the day with 26 kills, six blocks and 10 digs. Alexis Kammerer had 10 aces, 59 assists and 17 digs. McKenna Young added 10 kills and eight digs. Daisey Nelson had four aces and 11 digs. Kirsten Fish finished with six blocks and eight kills.

The Cardinals were seeded No. 1 in the WIAA Division 3 tournament and were scheduled to host Boscobel in the first round Oct. 19. Results were not available by press time. Should Brodhead win, the Cardinals would host the winner of Riverdale and Darlington on Oct. 21 in the regional semifinal, with the regional championship Oct. 23 at 7 p.m.
