BELLEVILLE — Monticello could not overcome an early hole and lost to Bellville in a nonconference game Dec. 17, 60-54.

The Wildcats led by as much as 12 in the first half and were ahead by five at halftime. Monticello big man Reece Rufer picked up his fourth foul of the game with five minutes to play before halftime but did not foul out. Rufer finished with a double-double — 13 points and 15 rebounds.

Peter Gustafson had 17 for the Ponies while Jeffrey Ace finished with 10.

Royce Clark (12) and Jaden Winkers (11) led Belleville (3-3), with Josh Grebel and Sawyer Fahey each scoring eight points.

The closest Monticello (4-2) could get in the final 10 minutes was within six points.


New Glarus 85, Barneveld 49

BARNEVELD — The Knights rolled the Eagles Dec. 17 in a nonconference game thanks to a superb first half.

New Glarus jumped out to a 44-16 lead at halftime and emptied its bench in the second half. Ten different Knights scored in the game, four of which reaching double-figures. Jaden Kreklow led all scorers with 23 points and had seven steals. Trevor Gassman had 14, Garrett James had 12 and Zach Feller finished with 10. Connor Siegenthaler added nine and Mitch Schadelwait had eight for the Knights. 

New Glarus (7-0) had 22 steals as a team, including four each from Gassman and Siegenthaler.

Barneveld (2-5) was led in scoring by Seth Sullivan (13) and Spencer Sullivan (10).


Durand 53, Juda 41

DURAND — Tied at 24 at halftime, the Panthers could not contain hot-shooting Durand in the second half and lost in a nonconference game Dec. 17.

Both teams scored 11 in the first and 13 in the second, but Durand went on a 21-3 run in the third quarter that put the Panthers on the ropes. The Bulldogs hit eight shots from the field in the period, including two 3-pointers and three free throws. Gavin Kammerer’s 3 was Juda’s only basket of the frame.

The Panthers hit six 3s in the contest and 16 total shots from the field. However, Juda went to the free throw line just five times total, making three attempts. Durand had 21 field goals in the game — three of which from beyond the arc. The Bulldogs were 8 of 12 from the charity stripe.

Justin Smith scored 15 to lead Durand, which also got 14 points each from Aiden Snider and Alex Mont. Quinton Kammerer led Juda with 11, while Gavin Kammerer had 10 and Dominic Taylor eight.


Darlington 61, Fennimore 50

FENNIMORE — The Redbirds pulled away in the second half to grab a bigger hold on their lead in the SWAL standings.

Darlington (7-0, 3-1) led 29-22 at halftime and outpaced Fennimore 32-28 in the second half.

Matthew Douglas led the Redbirds with 13 points, while Stryker Fitzsimons had 12, Bryce Stone 11, Cayden Rankin nine and Trae Schilling eight.

Warren Adam led Fennimore (6-2, 2-2) with 21 and Kellen Kenney had 14.

Darlington leads Mineral Point and Southwestern by a game each in the SWAL standings.


McFarland 93, Brodhead 43

BRODHEAD — The Spartans scored 67 points in the first half — including 18 off of 3-pointers — to easily pull away from the Cardinals.

McFarland hit on 26 field goals and was 9-for-11 from the line in the half. Brodhead, meanwhile, had just six field goals (two 3s) and shot 7-for-10 from the stripe for just 21 first half points.

Brodhead finished with four 3s in the second half, but were still outscored 26-22.

Trevon Chislom of McFarland (5-2, 3-2 Rock Valley) led all scorers with 25 points, while teammate Max Hanson had 13 and Daniel Toennies had 11.

Cade Walker led Brodhead (2-4, 1-4) with 12 and Dawson Van Whye and Dawson McGinty each had 11.
