Ponies clinch conference title; Redbirds score 111

ALBANY — The Monticello Ponies clinched its first Six Rivers East Conference title in 10 seasons Feb. 14, toppling Albany 83-30. In the 2010-11 season, the Ponies tied Barneveld for the league crown. In fact, Monticello was also co-conference champions in 2008-09 and 2009-10.

Peter Gustafson and Reece Rufer each scored 16 points to power Monticello’s win over the Comets. Tristan Flanagan added a season-high 10 points. 

The Ponies went up 23-2 to open the game and went into halftime with a 49-11 lead. 

Albany was led in scoring by Rob Schroeder, who had nine points.


Darlington 111, Riverdale 34

DARLINGTON — On Feb. 13, for the second time this season, the Redbirds put up triple-digits on the scoreboard in a win against Riverdale.

Darlington led 56-23 at halftime and outscored Riverdale 55-11 in the second half. The Redbirds attempted just nine 3-pointers in the game — hitting four. Overall from the field, Darlington was 48 of 74 (64.8%) and went 11 of 19 from the free throw line.

The Redbirds stole 20 passes as a team, finished with 25 combined assists and pulled down 43 rebounds. All 13 Darlington players scored.

Matthew Ruf led Darlington with 20 points on 9 of 11 shooting, including a pair of 3s. He also had seven rebounds.

Carter Lancaster had 16 points, Ross Stauffacher 15, Hunter Hardyman 12, Cayden Rankin nine and Ethan Schuchart eight for the Redbirds. Schuchart added seven rebounds, while James Hartwig had nine points and eight boards. Rankin finished with eight steals and five rebounds.


New Glarus 53, Belleville 40

BELLEVILLE — The Glarner Knights moved to within one with of their fourth straight Capitol South Conference title with a win over their rivals Feb. 13.

The Wildcats suffered a massive blow with senior Sawyer Faye injured, and New Glarus was able to take advantage. The Knights led by just three at halftime but outscored Belleville 34-24 in the second half.

Garrett James led New Glarus with 15 points, while Mason Martinson had 12, Darris Schuett nine and Nathan Streiff eight. The Knights have now won nine of their past 10 games.

Trevor Syse had 17 to lead Belleville, with teammate Gavin Boyum adding nine.


Black Hawk 46, Pecatonica 30

SOUTH WAYNE — Jaylen Rufenacht scored 16 points to lead the Warriors to a Six Rivers East win Feb. 14. Teammate Avery Baumgartner added nine.

Black Hawk was lock-down on defense in the first half and rolled into the locker room at halftime ahead 18-5.

Pecatonica was led in scoring by Hunter Enloe with 10.


Evansville 73, Brodhead 69

BRODHEAD — The Cardinals put four players in double figures and hit 15 3-pointers, but it wasn’t enough to knock off the Blue Devils Feb. 13.

Owen Leifker hit six 3s for 18 points, while Connor Green added four 3s en route to 16 points for Brodhead. Cade Walker and Cody Malcook each had 10 points for the Cardinals, and Brady Malkow added eight points. Brodhead was just 4 of 6 from the free throw line.

Evansville was 14 of 23 from the charity stripe and hit five 3s. Seth Maag scored 21 points to lead the Blue Devils.
